A shared experience from our Junior Acoustic Intern – Harvey Bennett.

“I thought I’d share my experience starting a summer internship at Acoustic South East, coming straight out of my undergraduate degree in Sound Engineering. I knew from researching careers in acoustics that this was a field I wanted to pursue and I was particularly interested in the problem-solving aspect, but I did not realise how broad it is.

After dropping my CV into the office, I was not expecting a reply. However, I was invited up to the main office and given the opportunity to sit down with Scott and Simon. Within a month of finishing my degree, I was working full time at Acoustic South East. The opportunity that they have given me has been invaluable and I am extremely grateful to the whole team for taking the chance on me.

I overestimated the amount of knowledge that I had from my Sound Engineering course, and upon starting at ASE, I quickly realised there was far more to professional acoustics than I had learned during my degree. The team were very sympathetic to this and took the time to teach me the basic principles that I was missing and helped me gradually grow my knowledge and confidence to apply these principles in practice.

By the second month of working, I was conducting site visits alone, setting up noise surveys, analysing data I collected, dealing with clients and helping write reports among other responsibilities. The team placed a great deal of trust in me to complete the work to a high standard and represent the company professionally, with all of my work being reviewed and checked by experienced colleagues.

The acoustic principles and practical skills that I have gained over my time at ASE are far beyond what I imagined I would learn in such a short period, and I am excited to see where this career takes me. I’m looking forward to starting the IOA Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control in September, and would highly encourage anyone considering a career in acoustics to gain similar practical experience at a consultancy like ASE”.
